My Question To is a Q&A on our Facebook page with different Scandinavian artists. This time you had the chance to ask Blaue Blume whatever you want, but keep your eyes open, next time Asbjørn will answer all your questions and other artists will follow!
Blaue Blume, these four guys from Denmark, who assure us so many times of their mix of cool soft-rock and melodramatic pop. They recently released their new album Syzygy, this track ‘Sky’ is only one example for their enormous Creativity, it’s fancy, adventurous and a bit especial.
They will play on the 3th of December for free on the Ja Ja Ja Julefest in Berlin and the day after this Blaue Blume will have a show at Häkken in Hamburg, presented by Nordic by Nature.
But nobody can present this band better as themselves, so here are the answers:
1. Where or how do you find creative inspiration?
Jonas: A very wise man once said that music is laughter. I believe that to be very true. When I create something I like, I cannot necessarily put a finger on why I like it… I just do. I think the reason why, is that, that particular something, which could be a melody for example, comes from a very honest place within me where every emotion has a radical reaction to it for example in form of a note … or laughter or a cry. When being creative it is all about finding that place where you, sort of allow yourself to be like a child. I find that place best by being playful, having fun.
Robert: I believe we find our inspiration in a lot of different places. Music, of course (and all kinds of music really. We definitely aren’t limited to one or two specific genres when listening to music), literature, films, paintings, etc. Therefore it will probably make sense to distinguish between direct and indirect inspirational sources. The impression of a painting isn’t necessarily directly translational to musical ideas, but no matter whenever a work of art seems important it infuses into us the desire to create ourselves. The inspiration and ideas found in others music is obviously usually “easier” to work with or implement in our own music, but still it depends on in which way we have been inspired. Is it a specific sound of an instrument or a specific rhythmical pattern, or is it more generally a vibe, an atmosphere or an musical attitude? It’s a hard question to answer, not least because of the extensiveness within it.
Søren: I agree with what’s already been said, and just want to add that I very much feel inspired to make music when feeling happy. When i’m in a good mental state I feel like doing things in and with my life, and these things often turn out as music. So pure joy is definitely a source of inspiration to me. And obviously this can come from a number of things.
2. Choose: Pizza or Burger?
Søren: Burger… no, Pizza. Argh. Both? Depends on the occasion. But I’d love for shawarma to be an option here.
Jonas: Wow! Do you really have to choose! That’s insane… I could never choose. It’s like Sophie´s choice right… Well: Pizza… I Guess…. No Burger! No…. I take both. Ahh fuck, you can’t… I forgot. Okay Burger then. ah, wait - Can you put the pizza in between the burger buns?? Hmmm, that is probably not an option. I see… Let it be burger then!! Wait wait, are we talking McDonalds or burger king here… or something third?!?!?! I’d go with burger king then. No, you know what let’s go with pizza! It’s the radical choice, but in ten years from know I’ll be happy about it. Pizza it is! I really fucking hope we’re talking all sorts of topping here!?? If I go with pizza I wanna be able to, you know, shift between pepperoni, ham, so on and so forth. I’m def not going with pizza if that pizza only comes with pepperoni!!! I really hope we can stretch it here?? If not I’ll take Burger… From burger king. If that’s even an option. Shit , I don’t know Nathalie. Is there a third option?? I really like lasagne… Actually.
3. Which bands did you have on your walls when you where kids?
Robert: Nirvana. All over the place. And Status Quo (an old poster belonging to me and Søren’s dad). And actually The Rasmus too! (God knows what happened to them?).
Søren: Kashmir. A lot of them. Live, concert posters and with press photos. I really had a thing for them. Still think they’re good. I actually think I had a Jennifer Lopez poster on my wall when I was a kid… Probably not for the musical inspiration… for another kind of inspiration I think ;)
Peter: I had some Metallica posters. And actually some Jennifer Lopez and Britney Spears posters as well.
4. Why did you not make a CD but only Lp and iTunes ? Do you have something against the CD sound?
Søren: Not at all. I myself have been buying and listening to CD’s all my life. Is was a decision made by the record company as there are almost no CD stores left. We’d love to have some CD’s to sell when on tour and we will definitely talk to them about it.
5. Hey Blaue Blume :) what are your all time favourite songs?
Jonas: Shit… that’s a tuff one. For me, Joni Mitchell‘s “Both Sides Now”, has been very important. Joni in general.
Søren: As this is an impossible question I’m just gonna name a song I really like right now. Even that’s not too easy, but I guess the new Bowie tune “Blackstar” is spinning a lot these days.
“Leper Affinity” by Opeth is a song I keep coming back to when I don’t know what else to listen to. That one just always does it for me.
Peter: When I think of what to answer to that question, I often come back to “Between the bars” by Elliot Smith. I find a intimacy and a vulnerability in that song, which moves me everytime I hear it.
Robert: This list will forever be imperfect, so, just to name some:
You Know You’re Right - Nirvana
Says (live from the ‘Spaces’ album) - Nils Frahm
Det som en gang var - Burzum
Abandon Window - John Hopkins
Ber - Taragana Pyjarama
Min Jesus, lad mit hjerte få - Carl Nielsen
Holocene - Bon Iver
The Beatitudes - Kronos Quartet
Starting Point / Acoustic Version - Jakob Bro
What is being whispered in the beginning of “Buoyant Forces”?
Jonas: Nice Mads!!! Mega fat that you ask … we’re raving that you can not really hear it. Her speaking say whatever you want her to say :) At the risk of sounding flippant. Hope your understanding.
