Recent studies show that Danes are happy people. So, how do happy people celebrate Easter?
The short answer: Easter in Denmark involves beer!
But there is of course also a longer answer. The Vikings have become more civilised and also Christianised. They became the Danes stopped conquering and looting the world and started writing – poems. The Danes write during Easter “gækkebrev” to each other. It is a letter with a short poem. You send it to your friends, but don’t sign it. If they find out that you sent it, you give them some chocolate or flowers. Not so much Viking anymore.
But Danes also love good food for Easter. A lot of lamb, salmon and herring. And beer. The Danes brew since 1890 dark, sweet and heavy Easter beer. It seems that the Vikings did not fully disappear.
Happy Easter or how the Danes say: Glædelig Påske
