Hailing from Ulnes, a village of 500 people in the Nordic mountain valley of Valdres, Farao makes enchanting and adventurous pop music, tinged with celestial electronics and earthen orchestration. Produced by Mike Lindsay of Tunng, Till It’s All Forgotten bristles with atmosphere and nuance. All of which is to forget that the voice at the centre of it all, which belongs to Kari Jahnsen, is a rare instrument. At times, it is sweet, at others it is strident and commanding. Through all of these elements, Farao presents a debut album which arrives fully formed and ready to capture hearts and minds.

In October Farao will play at Kantine am Berghain in Berlin on the 6th and we’ve got 2×2 tickets for the show to give away. To become the owner of these tickets, write an email to [email protected] and tell us why you should attend the concert.
As usual, we have asked our Artist of the Week five breezy questions and here are her five breezy answers:
What are the images on the EP cover meant to evoke?
My artwork is made by my friend Inga Birgisdóttir, who has made covers for a lot of Icelandic bands (Sigur Rós, Sin Fang etc). It’s a cross between the analog and digital, having my face draped in these colourful shapes. I feel like it reflects the mix of acoustic and electronic elements in my music and the playfulness of the recordings.
What music were you all listening to at the time you recorded the record?
I was listening to a lot of William Onyeabor, Dirty Projectors, The Flaming Lips, Tune-Yards (especially the song Real Thing) and Warpaint. And St. Vincent!
What’s next for the band? Do you currently have more material in the can slated for a future release?
I’m actually half way through recording the second album already. I had this burst of inspiration after I recorded the first album and I had to wait a whole year for it to be released. Figured I might as well just start recording the next right away, before I get too busy touring the first one.
What’s your favorite lyric that you’ve written. Why?
I think that might be “If you don’t believe me, no one will” from “Fragments”. To be so overly consumed in a person that everything and everyone else bleakens and you lose your self-sufficiency. It’s so unhealthy to validate yourself through another person, but we all do it.
