Every Friday we select the best new tracks and videos from all around Scandinavia and present our editorial picks in the New Music Weekly series. Check out this week’s selection with MØ, Novah, Nicky William, Sgrow, Hey Elbow, WhoMadeWho, Loreen, and Sumie.
MØ - When I Was Young
MØ recently surprised us with a new EP & the beautiful video for the lead single ‘When I Was Young’. The video was inspired by Edvard Munch’s painting ‘The Dance Of Life’. It’s an illustration of three women—one in white, one in red and one in black—and tells a story about three stages of human life: youth, maturity, and old age.
Novah - Ghost (feat. Amanda Mair)
Swedish dream-pop band Novah returned last week with a new song after their fantastic ‘Alaska’ EP back in 2016. On ‘Ghost’ they have teamed up with acclaimed singer-songwriter Amanda Mair, who’s about to release her brand new ‘To The Moon’ EP in exactly one week.
Nicky William - Hurricane
Young and excitingly talented Swede Nicky William (what a remarkable voice!) will release his debut album ‘Set Your Loved Ones Free We Have You Surrounded’ on November 17th, ‘Hurricane’ is his latest single!
Sgrow - Mind’s Eye
Norwegian electronica duo Sgrow are officially releasing their sophomore mini-LP ‘Circumstance’ today. ‘Mind’s Eye’, the last track on the album, is calmer and more soothing than the rest - yet it also has the hypnotizing edginess typical of Sgrow’s soundscapes.
Hey Elbow - Quest
Last week the Swedish band Hey Elbow played at Iceland Airwaves festival and now they are back with a new video for their single ‘Quest’. On top of that the trio is releasing their second album in a couple of weeks.
WhoMadeWho - Dynasty
WhoMadeWho don’t really need an introduction: Danish trio is known for their infectious tunes that merge all possible genres from pop to disco to stoner rock. ‘Dynasty’ - a new single from their upcoming album ‘Through the Walls’ - has dreamy yet playful vibes, visualized in the colorful video:
Loreen - Hate The Way I Love You
You might remember Loreen‘s ‘Euphoria’ - a track that was buzzing from all sorts of devices after the Swedish singer won Eurovision 2012. Her latest release, ‘Hate The Way I Love You’ is a beautiful, ballad-like track that slowly builds up only to sweep you off your feet with its dynamic, pulsating rhythm. Definitely leaves us very curious about Loreen’s new album ‘Ride’ - out on November 24th.
Sumie - Divine Wind
Another talented Swede on our list, Sumie, is releasing her second album ‘Lost in Light’ via legendary Bella Union today - a collection of quite, mellow ballads. Sumie’s voice is tender but firm. In ‘Divine Wind’, it is accompanied by steel guitars in the background, creating an almost ethereal atmosphere.
