Every Friday we select the best new tracks and videos from all around Scandinavia and present our editorial picks in the New Music Weekly series. This week we are featuring new Nordic releases from Seinabo Sey, Lxandra, Sigrid, Menke, Hey Elbow, KÅRP, & Kasbo (feat. Frida Sundemo).
Seinabo Sey – I Owe You Nothing
Three years after her succesful debut album ‘Pretend’ Swedish singer Seinabo Sey returns with her new single called ‘I Owe You Nothing’. Its the first taste of her upcoming new album, that will be released this year. Welcome back, Seinabo Sey!
Lxandra – Dig Deep
After ‘Hush Hush Baby’ and ‘Flicker’ Berlin-based Finnish pop newcomer Lxandra released her brand new track called ‘Dig Deep’ including a video clip. The lyrics and the video criticize the image of women that still reigns in our society. “Women quickly become ‘too much’ in the eyes of our society. They are expected to be calm and quiet” says Lxandra. She’s currently working on her debut album, which will be released later this year.
Sigrid – Raw
Norwegian pop sensation and BBC Sound of 2018 winner Sigrid released her new track called ‘Raw’, the first in a collection of brand new material set to drop every week. Check it out below! Sigrid first received international attention with her song ‘Don’t Kill My Vibe’, which was streamed more than 30 milion times on Spotify so far.
Menke – Moln (Alva Noto Remodel)
Wonderful Swedish newcomer Menke already charmed us last year with her debut single ‘Moln.’ Now the track is getting a slight upgrade – thanks to German producer Alva Noto. In his remix, Menke’s soft and tender voice is nicely complemented with electronic beats and e-guitars.
Hey Elbow – C0C0C0
Swedish trio Hey Elbow have dropped their sophomore album this week: ‘C0C0C0’ is channeling dark & dreamy vibes, with occasional unexpected twists and turns. Start with ‘Quest’ in case you’ve missed it or, for something less on the pop side of things but rather with a touch of orchestral grandiosity, ‘Ghosts of Budva.’ By the way, Hey Elbow will be performing at Berlin’s Funkhaus on May 6!
KÅRP – Freak Smile
Another Swedish outfit on our list this week is KÅRP. There’s something very captivating about their new single ‘Freak Smile’: maybe this sense of urgency, and strength, and restlessness in the track’s beat as well as in the vocals. Perfect tune for a dark disco night – think Vök meets Grimes.
Kasbo – Over You (feat. Frida Sundemo)
Last but definitely not least: electronica wunderkind Kasbo has recently dropped a sweet new banger ‘Over You’ that features vocals by Frida Sundemo. His long-awaited debut LP ‘Places We Don’t Know’ will come out on March 23rd already, so ‘Over You’ is the last teaser – and a damn good one for that. It’s the most delightful electronic synth-pop that can be compared to the likes of ODESZA.
