Easter is coming up and it is time to introduce “Mämmi”. Finland’s traditional Easter dessert that not even every Fin loves.
The Fins love candy and sweets. They eat it whenever they can, on parties and on holidays. They even bake special cakes for their dead poets and writers. When they bake, they use all the good stuff. Spices, marzipan, whipped cream – can you smell it already?
So, the holiest of Christian holidays, the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, Easter, deserves something unique and special. “Mämmi”.
It is indeed unique and special but not as you might think. It sometimes looks like a lovely bowl of chocolate pudding. But usually it looks like a fresh portion of shit! It is a cold cream of rye powder blended with water. You typically eat it with milk or whipped cream and sugar. How does it taste then, you wonder? It tastes like some sweet and dark beer!
Happy Easter or how the Fins say, Hyvää pääsiäistä!
